HOT TUBBIN AT MARDI GRAS!

Jeri Jacquin, Movie Maven

Here it is after all the rains, storms, floods and even a little earthshake…Mardi Gras in Downtown San Diego tonight! What you might not know is that the Grand Marshall’s of the parade are two cast members from the upcoming MGM film “Hot Tub Time Machine” opening March 26th.

Craig Robinson and Clark Duke are not new to the big or small screen. Robinson is best known lately for his role as Daryl in the hit sitcom “The Office” and starred in “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and “Knocked Up”.

Duke has worked in film as well with his stint in “Super Bad” as well as his new film slated for release “Kick-Ass” starring opposite Nicholas Cage and Mark Strong.

So how does an interview go horribly giggly and rambunctiously fun while sitting outside on a sunny San Diego day? Awesomely.

Movie Maven: So tell me about HOT TUB TIME MACHINE…like you didn’t see that question coming.

Duke: Well, it’s about a hot tub and a time machine.

Robinson: Its ridiculous! You don’t have to go in thinking – you just go in!

Duke: It’s not “The Fountainhead”.

MMaven: Its not? <laughing> I’m bummed now, I was expecting “The Fountainhead”.

Robinson: Just have a couple of drinks before you go.

Duke: Just have a couple of drinks during! Just go and live it up.

MMaven: So out of all of you John Cusack looks like the life of the party eh? Is he a fun guy to work with?

Duke: Yea, he is! I had a good time with him.

Robinson: Wow, its like you know him, like you were there! You know he’s the executive producer on this.

Duke: If you ever want to pick up chicks go out with John Cusack. Just being at a table with Johnny…the girls LOVE John, its ridiculous! He’s like THE romantic comedy guy.

Robinson: Look at him!

Duke: He’s a handsome guy to. He’s tall too! I don’t think most guys know he’s like 6’2” right?

Robinson: Yep, we are the same height.

MMaven: You know why that is right? He ruined women all over this planet holding up that boom box.

(Here’s where I’d like to enter a side note. Had Mr. Cusack shown up for this interview they would be mopping up a puddle that once was me! I have always been an avid fan of Doblers and think in this high-school-girl-heart that SOMEWHERE there is a boom box with my name on it playing “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel!!  But I digress….)

Duke: Lloyd Dobler! That’s all chicks see when they see him.

MMaven: That’s exactly it! And your other friend..

Duke: Robbie Corddry?

Robinson: He’s a genius. He stole the movie man.

Duke: He really did. I love him like family!

MMaven: Did you all know each other before the film?

Duke: Nope.

Robinson: Nope.

MMaven: How did it come about getting the roles?

Duke: I knew the people who wrote it because they did “Sex Drive”.

Robinson: I knew everybody through meetings.

MMaven: …and you all ended up in Vancouver right? (where the film was shot)

Robinson: Yea, it was awesome and I ended up with a sinus infection and it was the first one I ever had.

Duke: It was cool though.

Robinson: It was pretty intense.

Duke: I think I was in much better health breathing that air than I am normally.

MMaven: (to Duke) the Nordic air did wonders for you…(to Robinson) and sucked for you.

Robinson: Yea, but I had a good time at least.

MMaven: How was the lodge, it is very spooky looking.

Duke: It’s like the Shining!

MMaven: You didn’t see two little girls standing at the end of the hall did you saying “come play with us Danny”?

Duke: Not those two but there were a bunch of others <laughing>

MMaven: tell me more about what your working on next?

Robinson: I got a couple movies coming up. One is “Shrek Ever After” where I play a female ogre named Cookie. I made a movie with Kevin Spacey called “Father of Invention” and then I did a movie called “the Prentender” where I play two roles. One is a big time Mike Tyson-esque boxer whose name is Honey B. Jefferson (Duke giggles to the side) he runs out of cash and loses his money. I can’t give it all away.

MMaven: I have to ask, what was it like working with Kevin Spacey?

Duke: A Spacey fan eh?

MMaven: Absolutely!

Robinson: He is amazing to watch him work. Just as a human being there is all this talent sitting inside him. He does impressions and kept us entertained. It was his birthday while we were shooting in New Orleans last year. We all went out and it was fantastic.

MMaven: Did you get to hear him sing?

Robinson: Didn’t get to hear him sing.

MMaven: He’s a good singer.

Robinson: Yea, he did the Bobby Darin movie!

MMaven: What do you have coming up young man (referring to Duke)?

Duke: After this I have a movie April 16th called “Kick Ass”.

MMaven: I saw the trailers and giggled a bit.

Duke: Oh yea, its great fun. Then there is this movie I’m doing with Eddie Murphy called “1000 Words” coming out sometime this year, not sure when.

MMaven: You’ve had a busy year haven’t you guys! So what do you think of all this Mardi Gras in San Diego. Are you ready!

Robinson: We are paraders!

Duke: Absolutely, doing a lot of them. Just finished the big one.

MMaven: Did you just do Mardi Gras in New Orleans?

Duke: Yea, was there two days ago.

MM: So you are just continuing the parade.

Robinson: This is the third or fourth parade we’ve done. We’ll see what this town has to offer.

Duke: I’m daring you San Diego! Nahh, I can’t stay, I have to go back to LA tonight.

MMaven: Your leaving?

Duke: Yep, I have to be back to work in LA in the morning.

MMaven: You? (Motioning to Robinson)

Robinson: Nahhh man I’m staying here and chill out!

MMaven: There’s a lot of stuff to do here.

Duke: Like what?

MMaven: Seriously? Try all the restraunts and the bars and single women.

Robinson: I will be here and chillin (he says looking cool in his chair).

MMaven: It was nice to talk to you two gentlemen. You look tired.

Duke: Nah, we just had a big lunch.

Robinson: Yea, we ate some soul food and now chillin.

Duke: Seriously, we are in a coma.

Robinson: You are a pleasure, seriously.

Duke: We are here mentally but our bodies are fighting us.

MMaven: Is that what the tent is for? Nap time?

Duke: <laughing> I swear I’d kill for a nap!

Robinson: Oh man me too!

MMaven: Thanks for doing the clip for the boys in Iraq; I know they will appreciate it.

Duke: Absolutely, anything for them.

Robinson: It was an absolute pleasure seriously.

MMaven: Thanks again guys.

So there it is, just two dudes chillin in downtown San Diego with yours truly talking about life, Cusack, eating and beads for Mardi Gras. For more on this interview I will be posting video and girls, we will see man chest for beads!!  Oh yea.

Upcoming in March, more interview with Duke and Robinson and my review of HOT TUB TIME MACHINE.

Happy Mardi Gras!
