AMU’s Clegg Claims Pistol 2700 Any Sight Aggregate at 2021 National Pistol Matches

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Starting off the highly anticipated return of the National Matches at Camp Perry with a collection of impressive achievements, SSG Carl Clegg, 35, of the Army Marksmanship Unit, gave consistent notable performances to lead overall during the Any Sight portion of the challenging Pistol 2700 Aggregate event. Clegg tallied a total score of 2648-114X in the match.

The 2021 National Pistol Matches were fired July 12 through July 18 on the grounds of the historic Camp Perry National Guard Training Facility in Ohio. Over 3,700 entries were seen throughout the annual event, which featured competitions never before held on the pistol series schedule – including numerous aggregate opportunities.

Jon Shue earned several accolades in the National Matches aggregate events, including High Civilian.

Conditions throughout the National Pistol Matches were what was expected by those familiar with the unstable environment often found at Camp Perry. Gusty winds and bouts of precipitation greeted competitors on the firing lines, with sunshine and heat also making appearances through the week.

“This is Perry – it’s what you train for. You have to expect it,” said Jonathan Shue, 40, of Liberty, North Carolina.

Shue landed only four points behind Clegg for second overall in the Any Sight event and is a past winner of some of the most honorable events of the National Matches. He found several successes at the 2021 event, like earning High Civilian of the Pistol 2700 Aggregate, leading the Civilian class of the Center Fire 900 Aggregate and helping to claim multiple team competitions.

SFC David Paquette led the Pistol 2700 Aggregate Metallic Sight match, among other awards.

Shue had recently taken time off from competition, shooting his first match in over a year in early 2021. As if no time had passed at all, he jumped back onto the ranges at Camp Perry and produced a number of commendable showings.

“It was a good solid performance over the week. I didn’t do anything great, I didn’t do anything stupid,” he joked.

Mark Nicholson was the overall competitor in the .22 Rimfire portion of the 2700 Aggregate.

In addition to success within CMP events, Shue was also the High Aggregate winner of the inaugural Triple Crown Match, led by the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association. The match was held over three Ohio-based venues: The Cardinal Center in Marengo, the Canton McKinley Rifle Club in Canton and Camp Perry in Port Clinton.

For accumulating his score of 7944-425X, Shue received a prize of $2,250 and the Pardini Trophy. Various individual awards were also presented, including High Senior, High Junior and High Woman, among others. View the entire list of Triple Crown winners on the Cardinal Center website (https://www.thecardinalcenter.com/shooting-center) or the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association website (http://www.orpa.net/).

Abbie Leverett earned multiple Junior and Civilian honors in the aggregate events.

Along with the Any Sight category of the National Matches Pistol 2700 Aggregate, Metallic Sight and .22 Rimfire competitions were conducted. Leading the Metallic Sight was SFC David Paquette, 33, of Crewe, Virginia, who compiled an overall score of 2551-88X, while Mark Nicholson, 60, of Tomball, Texas, fronted the .22 Rimfire competition with a score of 2560-70X.

Additional category titles were presented to leading competitors of the match, including the High Senior, High Law Enforcement and High Civilian.

Junior Dustin Carr was the High Civilian of the .22 Rimfire Pistol category of the 2700 Aggregate.

Other aggregate events held throughout the week included the .22 Rimfire, Center Fire and the .45 Pistol matches, which were added to the National Matches schedule for the first time. Like the Pistol 2700 Aggregate, the competitions featured Any Sight, Metallic Sight and .22 categories. Separate recognitions were also given to Civilian and Military competitors in the match. Outside of individual competition, each discipline held its own team event.

Leading competitors of the National Matches Pistol Aggregate and Special Team events included:

2LT Lisa Emmert Traciak earned the High Woman title in the Pistol 2700 Any Sight match.
