Celebrate American Heroes at CMP’s Talladega D-Day Event

After a brief pause in 2020, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is pleased to announce the return of the annual Talladega D-Day rifle and pistol event, June 8-13, 2021, at the CMP’s own Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama.

The D-Day tribute commemorates the anniversary of the Allied Forces landing at Normandy Beach in France in 1944. Pay homage to the valiant heroes of the World War II generation by way of camaraderie and a variety of stimulating marksmanship events and activities, held throughout the 500 acres of Talladega Marksmanship Park.

The 2021 D-Day event features old favorites and a fresh lineup of matches, with the addition of the Garand Iron Man EIC Rifle Match that allows competitors to fire a Service M1 Garand or As-Issued M1 Garand toward possible Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) points. The new Prone GSM Match will provide a secure place for competitors 70 years and over who are itching to get behind the trigger. The match is fired completely at the prone position, to ease the usual physical requirements of off-hand shooting.

New events in 2021 include a Benchrest Garand Match, suited for all experience levels.

A traditional schedule of CMP’s specially designed Games events like the Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military (GSM) Carbine and Vintage Sniper rifle matches will intertwine with popular pistol competitions, like the 1911 As-Issued and Military & Police matches. The Roosevelt Commemorative Match, using vintage M1903 Springfield or U.S. Krag rifles, will further honor the military firearms of the past through friendly, recreational competition.

Other updates to the Talladega D-Day schedule include a Rimfire Sporter Rifle Benchrest Match, which incorporates the use of sandbags for increased stabilization for competitors as they fire .22 rifles in O-, T- or TU classes. Likewise, a Benchrest Garand Match will offer the same use of sandbags, using the M1 Garand rifle. Both of these matches are open to competitors of all ages.

Talladega D-Day competitors can also engage in CMP’s educational opportunities, including the M1 Maintenance Clinic and the GSM New Shooter Clinic (now featuring live-fire practice) – each respectively taking a more concentrated look into the inner workings of rifle preservation and competition fundamentals and led by certified marksmanship professionals.

Outside of regular D-Day competition, shotgun enthusiasts may take advantage of Talladega Marksmanship Park’s trap field, two 5-stand fields and a 15-station sporting clays field with automated trap machines. Also, be sure to check out the Park’s Unknown Distance Range, featuring 12 metal targets in the shape of life-size animals – including elk, deer, bears and hogs!

Rifle and pistol competitors will fire on Talladega’s state-of-the-art electronic target line.

Join the CMP for this great event, enjoying the technology of the present while remembering the sacrifices of the past. For more information on Talladega D-Day, visit
