EDGEFIELD, S.C.—The National Wild Turkey Federation recently announced its popular NWTF Grand National Calling Championships will not occur in 2021.
Annually held in conjunction with the NWTF’s Convention and Sport Show in February, the Grand National Calling Championships were postponed at that time and have now been cancelled in 2021. The contest began in 1977 and is considered the Super Bowl of turkey calling. It regularly draws hundreds of the world’s top youth and adult callers to compete in several divisions for Grand National titles and cash prizes.
“People have come to expect only the best for the Grand Nationals,” NWTF CEO Becky Humphries said. “We believe that having these contests at a smaller, lesser-quality venue or with reduced production value will not uphold those standards the viewers, callers and sponsors are accustomed to. We will come back in 2022 with a national convention and Grand National Calling Championships that will take both to a new level of quality and celebration.”
Callers who qualified for the 2020 and 2021 GNCC’s Senior Open and Friction divisions are still eligible to register and compete at the 2022 contest. More information on registration and rules will be released later this year by contest staff.
About the National Wild Turkey Federation
When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of work, that number hit a historic high of almost 7 million turkeys. To succeed, the NWTF stood behind science-based conservation and hunters’ rights. Today, the NWTF is focused on the future of hunting and conservation through its Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative – a charge that mobilizes science, fundraising and devoted volunteers to conserve or enhance more than 4 million acres of essential wildlife habitat, recruit at least 1.5 million hunters and open access to 500,000 acres for hunting.
