“At the Intersection of Guns and Mental Health: The Introductory Course,” webinar to be held on Oct. 28, 2020, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am PST is now available for registration.

Las Vegas, NV (October 2020) – Walk The Talk America (WTTA), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization designed to bridge the gap between the firearms industry and owners and the mental health industry, has made registration available for its next webinar, “At the Intersection of Guns and Mental Health: The Introductory Course.” The webinar will take place on Oct. 28, 2020, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am PST online. Brought to you by WTTA, ZW, and I.C.E., and presented by Michael Sodini, Jake Wiskerchen, and Rob Pincus. Wiskerchen is the co-founder and clinical director of Zephyr Wellness, a WTTA partner. The webinar will also be available on Dec. 1, 2020, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am PST. Registration cost with CEU certificate is $45.00 or free for information only.

This course is the first of a three-part series. If taken in succession, completion will result in the achievement of full WTTA certification in firearms and mental health culture. This introduction course is designed to cover the principles of firearms, firearms culture, responsible gun ownership, and suicide prevention and intervention as they relate to firearms.

During this course, attendees will:

  • Increase understanding of suicide by firearm and its disproportionate presence in American culture, particularly as it relates to overall firearm deaths;
  • Improve their understanding of the stigma related to mental health care among gun owners including veterans and first responders;
  • Learn how to validate the emotional experiences of gun owners;
  • Increase their empathy and understanding related to gun culture;
  • Improve their understanding of firearms broadly, including types, classes, and uses;
  • Gain new information on expected standards and need for clinical contributions to the field;
  • Understand “red flag laws” and transfer laws, along with clinician responsibility and ethical scope in Nevada.

The intermediate course will cover principles of suicide postvention, law enforcement, military, first responders, and other professions whose cultures of stigma often inhibit care access. The advanced course covers basic firearms training and uses, including live fire, along with a comprehensive understanding of the broad-based literature on firearms, plus mental health policy and advocacy. Part Two Intermediate and Part Three Advanced dates and registration will be announced soon.

“Through formal education, outreach, and engagement with the mental health and firearms communities, Walk the Talk America aspires to reduce firearm suicides and other negative incidents associated with firearms ownership,” Sodini commented. “These courses are available to counselors, clinicians, psychologists, and mental health administrators and supervisors.”
